Unintended consequences of pirates?
Amplify’d from dailyme.com
NATO says Somali pirates have hijacked another cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, the fourth ship seized in the last two days.
Somali pirates appear undeterred by U.S. and French attacks that have killed five pirates in the past week during hostage rescues, including that of an American sea captain.

Ok, forgive me if what i’m about to say is wrong, but i’m fairly confident (though not certain), that i know what i’m talking about. In the early years of the united states, there was little unity amongst the states. however, after a number of our shipping boats were hijacked (can’t remember by who or where), it helped us rally around a common cause and helped bring the country together.
What could be the unexpected consequences of today’s pirating?

I think your comment is spot-on. The current battle with pirates is no different than it was in the early days, any country with ships at sea is at risk.
That said, it’s not only Somali pirates, there is piracy going on in South America and Asia as well, and many lives have been lost. These are just much higher profile because so much money is at stake.

I think you’re talking about the issue with Barbary Pirates that Jefferson crushed….somewhere around the North West African Coast I presume.
I watched a special on CNN a couple of days ago about piracy in Somalia and it’s kind of fascinating. Apparently it’s supported by the ‘village elders’ and some people speculate striking a deal with them and building schools etc would curb piracy a great deal. I haven’t researched this issue further but I think there are similarities with Pakistan here (Three Cups of Tea).
Unintended consequences? Funding for Terrorism?
10 months agosorry about the double post there. Pick one and delete? (: The site seemed to hang and so I re-posted. What a rookie!

10 months agoSN, i believe that is the incident i was referring to. I read it about in a book about the drafting of the constitution, but couldn’t remember the details. I don’t know about Three Cups of Tea. Off the Wikipedia now to see what i can find.

Hey Eric, (SN was I - I think I registered as “SN” and never got around to changing it)
I’m interested, if you remember, what did the Barbary incident have to do with the drafting of the constitution? Did it talk about how Jefferson asserted the power of the Federal govt. or brought about the unity of the nation or something?
Three Cups of Tea is a pretty good book, it’s about a mountaineer who builds schools across rural Pakistan. Though initially he does out of a promise made to the Balti people, he later realizes that it’s a strong tool against fighting fundamentalism. The book has some pretty interesting views on the cultural clash and the role of the village elders.
10 months agoHi Sohil. My recollection is that there was very little unity amongst the states and little interest in joining together under one common government. but when the pirating issue arose, the states realized the benefits of a national navy, which began to change people’s perspective on unifying.
Three Cups of Tea sounds very interesting. Thanks for the explanation.
Hope you’ll start clogging one of these days - no doubt it would be interesting to know what you’re reading! Maybe even a group clog that’s administered by you. If you set one of those up, i want in!
